What’s the difference between plastering, skimming and rendering?

Plastering is typically two layers of plaster work on new plasterboard or damaged surfaces. This can be followed by skimming to make it smooth and ready for paint. Skimming provides a smooth finish to plaster work that is new or in reasonably good condition, for example skimming over an artax ceiling may be sufficient. For external surfaces, sand and cement rendering is required, also consisting of two layers. For period properties where the condition is poor then internal rendering may also be required (modern properties have walls that tend not to be able to support the weight of render).
