Replacing chipboard subfloor on first floor level

Posted by Sujith Menon, on
While doing some electric works, the electrician pointed out and showed that I have chipboard as my subfloor on the entire first floor. That explained why it was creaky and felt very feeble while walking on it. Is it advisable to change the chipboard (hate it) and replace it with softwood pine floorboards or other alternatives ? If so, any idea how much it would be for fitting -> 4 rooms and a landing area -> around 40 sqm.

If you hate chipboard, you should probably change it , especially if it creaks and feels feeble. Price depends on material you choose and finish . Old floor needs to be taken up and disposed of so that costs money too . But as for laying floorboards it could be in region of 20-40 GBP per sqm , subject on joist condition etc .

Hi Sujith there is nothing wrong with chipboard if installed correctly, pretty much all modern homes have it. The problem with replacing the whole lot would be the studwalls for the 1st floor rooms would be fixed to to it making it very difficult to do. It's probably best to get the loose boards refixed. Ed
