Carpenters and joiners

Carpentry is one of the oldest trades in existence today and involves some of the most fundamental work required in construction; both in first-fix construction of joists and timber-framed homes or in second-fix joinery which involves making wooden doors, skirting boards, flooring and staircases. Next time you're in a more traditional home, look around at all the wooden features and you'll soon spot the amount of work a carpenter is involved in when a house is built - and that's only the parts you can see!

Carpenters and joiners

If you need any woodwork doing around your home, you’re probably looking for a carpenter. One of the world’s oldest trades, modern carpentry uses a mixture of traditional woodworking tools and modern powered implements. It is also one of the largest building trades in the UK.

What does a carpenter really do?

Carpenters are responsible for building and fitting wooden fixtures in residential and commercial buildings. This includes doors, stairs, window frames and roofing, as well as items of furniture such as wardrobes and cabinets. Many carpenters are self-employed and work on a job-by-job basis, while others work for carpentry contractors. The specific jobs that a carpenter carries out will depend largely on what type of carpenter they are, although many will cover a wide range of woodworking activities rather than specialising in one particular area.

What type of carpenter do I need?

A rough carpenter specialises in the ‘rough’ work of building a structure, such as framing, forming and roofing. Joisters also specialise in the basic structural elements of buildings, and lay floor ‘joists’- boards which give the floor extra support.

Trim Carpenter
A trim carpenter specialises in the more detailed jobs for carpenters, and as the name suggests, work mainly on trims and also mouldings. If you have work you need doing to skirting boards, door trims, mantelpieces or any other decorative or ornamental features, you need a trim carpenter.

Trim Joiner
A carpenter joiner is usually a master carpenter who has spent many years building their experience in the trade. Carpenter joiners take care of any woodworking that requires high precision joins, and often make furniture and other wooden fixtures. A cabinet maker meanwhile performs similar work to a carpenter joiner, but often focuses solely on making furniture such as wardrobes, tables and cabinets.
