Painting and decorating is a great way of giving a room a lift. You don’t have to splash out a lot to create a more luxurious, dramatic or even an understated but classic look.
Painters and decorators are there not only to apply the paint or wallpaper but to advise on what you should go for to achieve the look you want. If you're stuck, they'll also be able to offer design advice and show you past work for inspiration.
Different painting effects:
Plastic bagging or cellophane painting
This effect is achieved by using the paint of your choice thinned out with a transparent glaze. After applying the base coat and leaving it to dry, get a friend to apply the glazed paint ahead of you whilst you go over the glaze with a plastic bag gradually dabbing the glaze to reveal the base coat underneath. To create an even effect, make sure you keep the plastic bag nicely crumpled.
Clouding
Similar to cellophane painting, this technique uses a flat brush or rag and is achieved by applying gentle pressure to the glaze top-coat and using circular motion to create a cloudy effect.
Sponging
Sponging on and sponging off are two great techniques for creating wall texture. Sponging off can create a basic reproduction of granite or marble. Sponging on is more effective when you use several colours and layer up the effect.
