Tilers
The different effects you can create with tiles are numerous and diverse. A good tiler will be able to advise you on the different looks you can achieve and what sorts of tiles to use depending on your requirements.
Ceramic tiles
Ceramic tiles are made from clay and other materials and offer a reasonably durable solution. They are popular in bathrooms, kitchens and unglazed ones are suitable for use in laundries or utility rooms. For a more decorative look, you might want to go for glazed ceramic tiles.
Porcelain tiles
Porcelain tiles are durable and probably the most cost effective option. They have a low absorbency so are ideal for places like wetrooms and bathrooms. Made from kaolin clays, feldspar and silica, porcelain tiles are fired at temperatures of around 1200?C. They're hard-wearing and are often used on walls and floors. Because of their low absorbency, they don't stain easily and are easy to keep clean.
Marble tiles
Marble tiles create a stylish and elegant look and are the epitome of luxury and opulence. Marble is great in kitchens and keeps cool in warmer rooms. Although marble is hard-wearing you may notice that if used on the floor, it may become dull and scratched in high traffic areas.
Mosaic tiles
Made famous by the Romans, mosaic is probably the first thing that springs to mind for many when you mention the word 'tile'. Many people may choose a mosaic motif for their bathroom floor as it's durable, cool and, because of the number of tiles and the grouting, is less slippery than a larger flagstone floor of the same materials used.
Granite tiles
Granite tiles will create a stunning backdrop in any number of different places. The way in which granite forms gives it excellent properties for tiling but polished versions may prove too slippery for bathroom floors so it's best to go for a rougher version of the rock in this case. Apart from that, granite is exceptionally hard, highly resistant to wear-and-tear and is impervious to water so makes for an excellent choice if you're budget allows.
Limestone tiles
Being made from a sedimentary rock, limestone tiles are known to contain fossils which adds a distinctive character. Limestone tiles can either be polished or matte and are popularly used around fireplaces, window sills and steps as well as in kitchens. It's not as hard-wearing as either marble or granite and it will vary in durability depending on the type of limestone you go for. A good tiler will be able to advise you on what limestone is suitable depending on your needs.
Quarry tiles
A traditional choice, quarry tiles have been in use in the UK for hundreds of years in both commercial and domestic settings. The tiles themselves are made from natural clay squeezed through an extruding machine and then fired to set.
Slate tiles
Slate is not inexpensive but is less expensive than marble or limestone and more types of it are waterproof making it again a good choice for areas that are likely to get wet often. It comes in a range of beautifully dramatic colours from black through to green and red. Slate tiles are commonly used on roofs and more so nowadays for exterior cladding.

Tiling designs and repairs
Tiling is a popular modern method of decorating kitchens and bathrooms that is highly functional and can create some great looking results. A seemingly endless variety of tiling designs are available, enabling you to customise your room just the way you want it. Suitable for both walls and floors, tiles are easy to clean and maintain. But getting it right first time can be tricky if you’ve never worked with tiles before, so if you’re planning a bathroom or kitchen it may be best to call in the services of a tiling expert.
What does a tiler do?
Most tilers work on walls and floors, in any room as needed. The first step in most tiling jobs is to measure the area to be tiled and then cut the tiles to fit. If the surface needs to be prepared before applying the tiles, tilers will do this as well. The next step is to create a level area of cement or other adhesive, and carefully fix the tiles to the adhesive base. Finally they will finish the job by applying grout in between the tiles and cleaning the whole area.
Popular tiling designs
The possibilities for decorating with tiles are huge. Wall tiles and floor tiles can be made from a variety of different materials. Ceramic tiles are one of the most popular and timeless choices in both kitchens and bathrooms, and these can also be glazed to add to their lustre and overall looks. Mosaic tiles are a unique way of decorating your bathroom walls or floor, with many smaller tiles combining to make up a single design or picture.
Marble tiles are popular for creating a sophisticated look in kitchens, while granite tiles are particularly hard wearing and water resistant. Other popular tiling designs use porcelain, limestone, slate and other materials. Tile-effect vinyl flooring can also be used in kitchens and bathrooms.
