Flat roof conversion to terrace in Nelson

Job description:I am in the process of buying a Victorian house on Sprowston Road. As with many of the terraces, the ground floor has been extended to accommodate a bathroom, creating an area of flat roof. The garden is very small and I'm in the very early stages of investigating the idea of converting the flat roof into a terrace to provide some extra outside space. This would entail adding a set of French doors from the upstairs bedroom, adding a staircase from the garden, laying a surface on the flat roof and some type of railing. The space is approximately 3m square. I assume the first thing is that checks would need to be made to ensure the existing roof could take the additional weight associated with a terrace (and people!).
