Renovation Sanding beech wood block floor in Cirencester Stratton Whiteway

Needed: Flooring Specialist in Cirencester Stratton Whiteway, GL7

Job submitted:Oct 2, 2008

Job description:We have lifted carpet in a 1953 house to reveal Beech herringbone woodblock floor. It covers hall (c. 10square m) and sitting room (c. 24 square m). In the hall patches have come very loose, such that you can pick out individual blocks. In the sitting room, most seems fixed down, but some seema a bit loose (clunks when you walk on it). It has clearly been stuck down qith bitumen, which is now solid, and coats the loose blocks on the underside. It is not at all sticky, just looks like a shiny coating. We are keen to see if the floor can be stuck down (understand that this may involve subfloor treatment) with one of the adhesives compatable with bitumen and concrete (eg one of the Lecoll range ?5500) and sanded and treated with something (?hardwax oil? a non solvent polyeurothane varnish). We are aware that a purist would remove all the bitumen, take up all the floor, re lay, and that that would cost more than laying a new floor. We are keen to try to preserve the old floor (as it is from the era the house was built in) but would otherwise not choose a parquet floor. Can you help us? We are aware that it will not be guaranteed to stay down, but are willing to take this risk providing it is not as expensive as a new floor.

Budget:I'm not sure
