Climbing plant in need of trimming in Coulby Newham

Job description:Hi, I have a climbing plant that either needs tying up, trimming back or a bit of both. I have no idea what kind of plant it is, or how to cut it back myself, so I daren't go hacking bits off for fear of killing it off. It's not a big job, I just don't have a clue about gardening, or a set of ladders to reach it, as it's growing above (and in front of) my kitchen window. I've bought the garden twine for it, I just need somebody to sort it for me. There's no mad rush, as I don't even know if it's the right time of year to be trimming it. If anyone can help me I'd be grateful.
