Skimming of artex on bedroom ceiling in Abingdon Abbey and Barton

Job description:I would like Artex on the ceiling of my bedroom to be skimmed. I have been told that the Artex has been applied directly to the plasterboard so skimming will be more effective that removing it altogether. The room is roughly 3x5m square and 2.2m high. I would guess that in order to cover it the plaster would need to be at least 5mm thick, but I'm no expert.
