Close coupled toilet not flushing in Ashley

Job description:We have a close coupled toilet which isn't flushing properly. If you remove the cistern cover and adjust plastic screw then you can either: a) get the overflow running into the toilet, or b) turn the water flow off. The cistern does not usually fill up, but will occasionally fill up and flush once. I'm sure it's a simple job and I was going to try fixing it myself - turn off water supply and change the pump, but I've a feeling it's not the whole pump that needs replacing, maybe just a valve.
