Property renovation in St Peter's and North Laine
"Complaint against G.W Rich.
I went on RatedPeople.com to search for a tradesman to complete the kitchen that I had started work on earlier in the month. I got three separate quotes and although Gerrard was not necessarily the cheapest quote, he was available to start the work. My pre-requisite was getting the worktops fitted and the appliances set in and, although the other elements needed dealing with, they were of the least importance as I could function with an unpainted wall etc.
After 2 days of â??workâ?? I seemed to only have 2 worktops laid (not fixed or properly cut in) and a wall painted. It is probably of little relevance but I did have an extremely busy period of work and so my thinking was â??well as long as it gets done for the same money then so be itâ??. I wish I had sent him packing at this point. The third day I got a text whilst at work, that I would not be seeing Gerrard as he had been hospitalised due to food poisoning. Mmmm. Later, I came home to see a sink had been set into a worktop, however, I was confused as to why it was quite literally 1cm from the back of the units. I was fitting a counter up-stand to the surface so this as well as being wrong was completely impractical. I told Gerrard to re-cut the sink. Luckily I had over ordered the worktop â?? but I had imagined using the extra to create a shelf above my washing machine in the airing cupboard. So the catalogue of disaster and mistakes begins!!
It transpires that the â??builderâ?? did not use or could not use a tape measure, one of the most basic building skills. My new built under double oven was about 17mm to wide for the space he had left for it. I knew it should fit because I sat and designed the kitchen in the kitchen shop for 2 and a half hours with the help of a computer program. I was away working in London for 3 days and this was the only â??jobâ?? left to do, I had not inspected the rest of the work yet as it was not finished. I returned from work at about 9.30pm to a house with no electricity, heating or hot water. Confused and worried I lit candles to inspect the fuse box. A simple call to a friend for some advice and I had the top lights on within 15 minutes. All the sockets were out and blew the house fuses when switched on. I found to scribbled notes from Gerrard. Heâ??d left his phone in a friends car so couldnâ??t reach me. Not a good excuse. He said that the power was off on Monday morning and that he had been â??working without itâ??. I say working because the cupboard doors, drawers and units were all over the flat and the unit pulled out and subsequently broken. (I was to find out why later) I was furious that he had not done anything about the power and confused why he, as a competent electrician/builder/plumber, couldnâ??t even work out a fuse box. I spent that night in a very cold house and had to work from home in the next day so told him not to come round until I had sorted the power.
He turned up at 9am to explain himself. I said I didnâ??t need and explanation, right now I needed power and heat and I would deal with him when I knew what had happened. He tried to blame the short fuse on my property, saying I must have a leak in the walls or something. I told him to leave. He said he was having personal problems and it was nearly Christmas. I told him I wasnâ??t a psychiatrist and I wouldnâ??t be cooking a turkey this Christmas.
I eventually found an electrician that was available this side of 2007 and he went through the whole flat, having to rip the back off some of my brand new cupboards to discover, 100 pounds later that the â??builderâ?? had drilled through a mains cable. I was furious and very upset.
So now I still donâ??t have a kitchen. It is the 22nd December and my grandmother arrives today. What makes the situation worse is that there is no finality to the situation because of his errors. Because of his inability to measure, it looks like I will have to order new kitchen pieces. The now fixed worktop is about 2cm short and cannot be moved in the right direction because of the gas hob being plumbed in above and the cupboard fixed below. He had tried to gain the 2cm in the other direction but in doing this broke my units, and seemingly hammered a waste pipe back into the wall. I had sealed this off and put a plug into it to stop the drain smell coming up and couldnâ??t believe it when I saw the plug discarded behind a unit.
G.W Rich has got every elementary building thing wrong in the putting together and â??finishing offâ?? of the kitchen. The side panels were drilled right through, the skirting was cut up into sections and mislaid, the trim was attached using the wrong screws, splitting the wood, the trim and side panels are all fitted badly, gaps and spaces in all the wrong places, mitrefix has been applied but never wiped off properly, grouting has been liberally applied but not wiped from the surface of the tiles, cables have been fitted wrong, legs have been pulled off the bases of the cupboardsâ?¦
The list is endless, I have no kitchen to function in and I estimate to get it all fixed and replaced properly it will cost me £1000 minimum. The kitchen looks good because I have good taste, but it needs a complete over hall to make it the way it should be. Otherwise what was the point in forking out for all of it in the first place?
Many phone calls to Ratedpeople, me chasing them for advice and solutions, and they only suggest suing the builder. I suggest that their website is a complete waste of cyberspace and an obsolete function to someone looking for a tradesman. What are they more than a glorified yellow pages? Unfortunately, I wish I had just used the yellow book because then I might have exercised a little more caution. The fact I found this man on their site made me relax slightly and believe that the tradesman could be trusted. Rated and trusted."
