Need to establish whether its possible to push back the 'fire back' about 120mm deeper into the chimney breast to allow for a larger fire base in an open log burning fire. Seems shallow at the moment compared to depth of the chimney breast so hoping there is space behind the existing fire back to replace with a deeper back. Would need someone to determine whether this is possible; there is a gap above the fire opening that you could fit tools down to check this, then quote for the work to replace the existing fireback. Our loft measures 750cm x 550cm, roughly. The middle section is already boarded over and screwed down. Most of it is covered with a small amount of old insulation wool.
We'd want to take up the existing boards, lay down new insulation, raise up the joists by 30 - 40 cm to give it clearance, and board over as much of the loft floor and insulation as possible.
