Traditional craftsmen

Getting a traditional craftsman in to do a job for you should be an exciting, novel experience. By the very nature of their work craftsmen are skilled and specialise in a defined, specialist area - whether it be bespoke joinery, roof thatching, decorative metalwork, stained glass, decorative glazing or any other craft that will make a very individual statement about your home.

Trained craftsmen

Craftsmen train and hone their skills over time because they enjoy what they do. By nature they take pride in their work and have a love for their craft. They are therefore ready to be rated on their craftsmanship and they value the feedback that their customers give others who are looking to hire someone. If you want someone who wishes to excel at their craft, then it makes sense to pick a tradesman willing to have their reputation made public.

Skilled craftsmen

Skilled craftsmen will often have creative and innovative ideas for you to consider, some of which may be more cost effective than a standard approach. For instance, if you are carrying out a period restoration a plasterwork specialist may be able to repair or replace parts of your cornicing and ceiling roses. If you are after an aesthetic statement then someone with creative flair can make a real difference to the ultimate success of the project. It's good to support the skills of a traditional craftsman or craftswoman and encourage the continued use of crafts in the building trade.

Not ready?

If you're not ready to post your job yet, don't worry, there's more information on the site to help you make the right choices and know what to do when you're ready to find a tradesperson.

Craftsmen

There are many different types of craftsmen, each with their own unique skills and knowledge. The type of work that traditional craftsmen undertake is highly specialised, and the end results will depend largely on the skill of the individual craftsman. For this reason, it’s wise to shop around and find a craftsman who specialises in your requirements before committing yourself.

What does a craftsman do?

As the name suggests, a craftsman is someone who specialises in a particular craft. The type of job a craftsman will take on therefore depends entirely on his or her specialty. Blacksmiths specialise in metal working, stonemasons work with stone, and so on.

Most craftsmen have worked in their trade for many years, first learning the ropes and gaining experience by completing an apprenticeship under the guidance of an experienced, qualified craftsman.

Types of Craftsmen

If you’re renovating a house or adding the finishing touches to a new build, it’s likely that you’ll need a number of different craftsmen to work on individual elements of the project. Alternatively, you may be in search of an individual with expertise in a specific trade to carry out repairs or make a design addition to your home.

Dry stone wallers, for example, are traditional craftsmen who specialise in the ancient art of building walls out of natural stone. If you need to have a retaining wall built, then a dry stone wall is a unique and beautiful solution.

If you’re looking to have some wooden furniture made that is far more personal than mass-produced pieces, a cabinet maker can offer you tailor-made designs that are built to a much higher standard.

Thatchers can repair or entirely rethatch thatched roofs, as well as providing you with a roof report for insurance purposes.
