Level of difficulty

Level 3: Advanced

What you need

  • Burglar alarm system kit
  • Power drill
  • Screw driver
  • Screws
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Fused spur

The steps to follow

  1. Buy an alarm kit from a security centre or DIY shop. It should comply with certification code, BS 6707 - a British quality standard for burglar alarms in the UK.
  2. Alternatively you could visit your local security centre and request a bespoke alarm kit for your home.
  3. Note that once you've installed your burglar alarm, you'll need to notify the police that you have an alarm system.
  4. Plan the route of the alarm system cables to the control panel. The cables can be concealed under carpets or they can also be pinned against the sides of the wall.
  5. The control panel should also be mounted on the wall. It should be connected to the mains supply via a 2 amp fused spur. For detailed instructions, consult your manufacturer's instructions on how to set the cable connection for the control panel.
  6. The bell box should be mounted in an area where it can be spotted but cannot be moved around, this will deter burglars from breaking in. The cables of the bell box should be installed behind enclosures and connected to the control panel.
  7. When you've finished installing your alarm system, make sure that everyone at home knows how to operate it.
