DIY safety guide

Our top 10 DIY safety tips as recommended by RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents).

  • Don't rush and plan what you're going to do before starting
  • Don't bite off more than you can chew
  • Use the right tools for the job and make sure they're in good condition
  • Wear the right clothes and shoes; check if you need protective gear
  • Read all instructions if you're unfamiliar with the task, tool or product
  • Stop and disconnect all electrical appliances and tools before repairing or cleaning them
  • Use an RCD or residual current device when working with power tools
  • Keep children and pets away from your work area
  • Keep all products in their original containers
  • Keep chemicals and paint away from the reach of children

A competent, qualified person should always carry out gas and electrical renewal or repair work. The Gas Safe Register has now replaced CORGI and you can check if your gas fitter is registered by going to the Gas Safe Register website and clicking on 'Check a Gas Engineer' at the top of the page.
