How to level out a garden

Avoid bumpy lawns with this guide on how to level a garden.

What you need

  • Compost / Fertiliser
  • Pegs
  • String lines
  • Hammer
  • Garden shovel
  • Sand
  • Topsoil
  • Garden rake
  • Water sprinkler
  • Water
  • Lawn roller
  • Vibrator roller

The steps to follow

  1. Mark out the area you plan to level using pegs and string lines. 
  2. Spread a layer of concrete onto the area.
  3. Tamp down the concrete with a vibrator roller.
  4. Next, spread a layer of sand on top of the concrete. The layer of sand should be about 50mm (2in) thick.
  5. Use a garden rake to evenly spread the layer of sand.
  6. Mix in topsoil, about 10cm (4in) thick, on top of the layer of sand.
  7. Spread compost, fertiliser, and topsoil to the surface.
  8. Level the surface again with a lawn roller.
  9. Now that the garden is levelled, you can lay your new lawn.
