How to insulate a loft

What you need

  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Dust mask
  • Filler foam
  • Insulation matting
  • Cable clips
  • Tape measure
  • Knife
  • Polythene sheet

The steps to follow

Note:
Insulation matting can be made up of mineral wool or glass-fibre, which irritates upon contact and be dangerous if you breathe it in. Make sure you wear gloves, goggles, and a dust mask before you lay the insulation matting.

  1. Remove all stored items from the loft
  2. Fill up the cable or pipe holes with filler foam.
  3. Use cable clips to secure cables to the sides of the joists.
  4. To prevent condensation or moisture from rising into the loft, add strips of polythene sheets between the joists and the ceiling surface. The sheets will act as a moisture barrier.
  5. Unroll the insulation matting.
  6. With a knife, cut the insulation matting and butt the ends.
  7. Make sure you don't insulate the eaves or cold water tank with insulation matting. Find out how to insulate your cold water tank here.
  8. Repeat steps 5-7, until the whole loft is covered.
  9. When you're finished, cover a piece of insulation matting on the loft hatch cover.
