The steps to follow
- Pick a pattern to create a painting pattern. For example, if you plan to paint a polka dot design, pick a circle as the template. Draw the shape on a piece of cardboard and cut it out to create your stencil.
- Before you start creating a pattern, cover your work area with dust sheets.
- Prepare the surface by applying a coat of primer and let it dry.
- Next, apply a base coat of your chosen colour.
- Trace the cut-out pattern onto the surface.
- Paint the pattern with the colour of your choice and allow it to dry.
- To finish off, apply a coat of paint sealant and let it dry.
Create patterns randomly
- Cover your work area with dust sheets.
- Plan a pattern which will suit the surrounding environment or according to a certain theme you have in mind.
- Create your painting effect using a variety of different materials; anything from a paint brush to a piece of rag. You might want to experiment with different tools and see which patterns can be created. Practise creating these patterns before you start painting the surface.
- When you're ready to start, first prepare the surface by applying a coat of primer and let it dry.
- Next, apply a base coat of your chosen colour. It will serve as the foundation.
- Prepare the colours you plan to use, either on a palette or in small jar containers.
- Dip the chosen tool into paint and start painting on the surface.
- Let your imagination run free and guide you when creating these patterns.
- When you’re done, let the paint dry before applying a paint sealer.
- Apply a coat of primer for a worn or washed out effect on the surface.
- Let it dry thoroughly.
- Use fine grade sandpaper and sand around the edges to create that washed out effect.
Note:
There isn’t really a fixed way in creating painting patterns. You can be as creative as you want. Experiment with different tools and see which patterns you can create.
