How to put up a curtain track

Curtains create mood and style but when you want curtains, you generally need a curtain track first! Find out how to fit a curtain track with this handy step-by-step guide.

Level 1: Basic

What you need

  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Spirit level
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws

The steps to follow

  1. Mark the position of the curtain track fixing on the wall. The tracks should go halfway between the ceiling coving and the window opening.
  2. Measure about 10 cm on both sides of the for the curtain tracks to allow room for the brackets.
  3. Mark the position for the brackets.
  4. Use a spirit level to check if it's level. Adjust the points if necessary.
  5. Drill the bracket holes on both sides.
  6. Screw the brackets to the wall and attach the curtain tracks.
  7. Fit the carrier rollers into the curtain track.
  8. Next, attach the curtain to the carrier rollers.

Note:
To see if your wall is made of wood, concrete or metal mesh, drill a hole into one of the bracket points.
a. If it's wood, use long woodscrews and nail through the plaster and beam by about 40 mm (1.5 in).
b. If it's concret drill the holes, insert wall plugs and attach the brackets.
c. If it's a metal mesh wall, drill a large hole for a spring toggle to fix the bracket in place.
