Level of difficulty
Level 2: Intermediate
What you need
- Compression fitting
- Slip connector
- Water pipe
- Saw
- Wrench
- Cap nuts
- Compression tape
- Bucket
The steps to follow
- If you suspect there's a leak in some pipe work, turn off the main water supply immediately. Open taps or drain cocks to drain water from the pipe. A drain cock can be located near the base of the water cylinder.
- You can try to contain the leak by blocking the hole with your finger, while a second person places a bucket to catch the water. Mop up any spilt water to prevent damage to surfaces.
- Fit a straight compression fitting to repair the leak. Otherwise, use a slip connector.
- Mark the punctured area on the pipe and cut it out with a saw.
- Clean the inside of the pipe ends with a brush.
- Fit the compression fitting into the pipe ends and slide a slip connector in place.
- Connect the other pipe end to the compression fitting. Tight the cap-nuts and olive with a wrench.
- Turn the main water supply back on and check for leaks.
- If the damage is a serious one, use two compression fittings or connectors. Cut the damaged section out and connect the new fittings to the pipes.
- If the leak is from a fitting, try tightening the cap-nut with a wrench. You can also use compression tape over the cap-nut.
