How to insulate pipes

Insulating your pipes is a relatively cheap and effective way of saving money on your heating bills. Make sure you protect yourself appropriately though, as insulation is quite a dangerous material to work with. Read how to insulate your water pipes here.

Level 2: Intermediate

What you need

  • Goggles
  • Dust mask
  • Gloves
  • Foil, fiberglass, or tubular-sleeve insulation
  • Acrylic tape or impaling pins
     

The steps to follow

1. Measure the lengths of the pipes you plan to insulate.
2. Fix any leaking pipes before insulating them.
3. Decide on the type of insulation you plan to use: foil, fibreglass insulation or tubular-sleeve insulation.

Note:
Don't forget to wear your goggles, dust mask, and gloves when handling fiberglass insulation.


4. Cut the amount of insulation you'll need.
5. Remove dirt from the pipes and wrap the insulation around the pipes.
6. If you're using tubular-sleeve insulation, cut it at 45 degree angles when connecting pipe joints.
7. Finish off by wrapping acrylic tape around the joints or use impaling pins to attach fibreglass insulation.
