How to repair a cracked roof tile

Here's a handy guide on how to repair your cracked roof tiles.

Level 2: Intermediate

What you need

  • Safety goggles
  • Gloves
  • Wire brush
  • Cement
  • Crowbar
  • New roof tile
  • Roof cement
  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Nails
  • Pliers

The steps to follow

To mend an existing roof tile
1. Use a wire brush to clean the roof tile.
2. To seal the roof tile, apply cement with a putty knife to the cracked area.

To replace the roof tile
1. Scrape off the cement around the roof tile with a chisel.
2. Slide a crowbar under the roof tile which rests right above the cracked roof tile and lift it off.
3. Gently tap with a hammer and chisel to dislodge the cracked roof tile.
4. Use pliers to remove any nails that are holding the roof tile clip. (The clip is used to hold the roof tile in place.) Replace the roof tile clip if it's rusted.
5. Apply roof cement along the edge of the replacement roof tile.
6. Slide the roof tile and clip it back into place and press down.

Note:
Remember to walk gently on your roof whilst repairing it so as not to damage other tiles.
