How to make your home more energy efficient & save money

Here are a few ways in which you can save even more energy.

Here are a few ways in which you can save even more energy:

  1. Turn your central heating thermostat down - this is a simple and effective way to be greener and save you money. If you turn down your heating by one degree, you can cut your heating bills by 10%

  2. Close your curtains at dusk to minimise heat loss at night

  3. Wash your laundry at 30C - although this doesn't save you a massive amount of money (between £8-£18 per year) if 50 families switched from 40C washes to 30C washes for a year, they would save enough electricity between them to make a quarter of a million cups of tea

  4. Update your boiler

  5. Improve your insulation

  6. Switch to energy efficient light bulbs - they're a lot brighter now making them much the same as ordinary light bulbs except that they last a lot longer and save you money

  7. Don't use your car for small trips, try cycling or walking instead - It'll make you feel a lot more energetic during the day and help you sleep better at night

  8. Sort out any leaky taps in your home - leaky taps can be fixed by replacing the washer although if that's not the case you may need a plumber to take a look at them

  9. Turn your appliances off at the wall and make sure that the standby button is off - if everyone in the UK did this, it would save £800 million a year so it will save you money as well

  10. Put a jacket on your hot water tank - this will pay for itself within 6 months and could save you £30 a year

  11. Waste less food - throwing away food unnecessarily costs the average family £420 a year so this is a really good place to look at ways you can save. Plan the meals you cook, make a shopping list and being aware of what you have in your cupboards will make it easier to cut down on waste
