Saving water in the kitchen

Here are a few examples of how you can save water in the kitchen.

Fix your leaky taps

The most obvious of quick fixes, this can save you from 12 -20 litres a day which equates to around 2-4p a day.

Drink from a chilled jug

If you can't, like pretty much everyone, abide by a lukewarm glass of water don't run the tap until it gets cold; instead fill up a jug and leave it to chill in the fridge. You might want to use a filter jug as well which will purify your water further.

Wash up in a bowl

Wash your dishes and your veg in a bowl instead of leaving the tap running. The left over water you use to wash your fruit and vegetables can be recycled when you water your houseplants or garden.

Economise on your washing machine and dishwasher

Both these appliances should have eco-settings and even if not, 30°C is appropriate for most detergents when washing your clothes and making sure that both operate only when full will economise and allow you to save water - up to 5-10l per cycle.
