Manhole covers and drains

First of all, if you're planning to do work on a manhole cover or drain, you should check the ownership of it.

The drainage system might be shared with your neighbours or owned by your local water authority so it's best to check this. Failure to ascertain ownership or doing work that doesn't comply with current standards or legislation could lead to legal action against you. Planning permission however, in this case is probably not required.
