For drainage maintenance and repairs, you do not usually need planning permission but if your council has used Article 4 to withdraw these types of work from permitted development status you may need to apply in this case, so it's worth checking to make sure.

Before carrying out the works you should clarify ownership as some drainage is shared by neighbours or owned by the local water authority. All homeowners in listed buildings may need listed building consent so again, check with your Local Planning Authority.
