Gate ornaments

Ornamental gateposts are subject to the same planning constraints as other 'means of enclosure' such as fences, walls and gates.

If you add to your existing fence with an ornament, you will need to apply for planning permission if:

  1. The gate is over 1m high with the ornament and is next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway); or over 2m elsewhere.
  2. You aren't allowed to alter fences, walls and gates etc. under an article 4 direction. Check with your local planning authority to investigate your situation.
  3. Your house is a listed building or in the curtilage of a listed building.
  4. The fence you intend to alter forms a boundary or is within the curtilage of a neighbouring listed building.
