Planning permission: adverts and signs
You're allowed to display signs on the front of or outside your property which are no bigger than 30cm² without planning permission
Also, if you're advertising something for a short period of time such as a BBQ or street party, these adverts are allowed to be 60cm² (unless you apply for permission).
Estate agent boards carry different rules but in general these should be no larger than 50 cm². Anything larger and for more permanent displays of businesses, for example, there are different rules which you must check with your local council.
All adverts and signs must follow these five golden rules; they must:
- Be kept clean and tidy;
- Be kept in a safe condition;
- Have the permission of the owner of the site on which they are displayed (this includes the Highway Authority if the sign is to be placed on highway land);
- Not obscure, or hinder the interpretation of, official road, rail, waterway or aircraft signs, or otherwise make hazardous the use of these types of transport;
- Be removed carefully where so required by the planning authority.
