February '09: Gas Safe Register is replacing CORGI

From 1st April 09, new regulations are coming into effect for UK gas safety. The Gas Safe Register will become the new hallmark for gas safety in the UK and replaces the CORGI gas registration scheme as the official gas safety body.

Gas Safe register

By law, only Gas Safe Registered engineers should carry out jobs on gas appliances or installations in your home. The register is in place to ensure that gas appliances are installed safely and the maintenance of those installations and systems follows UK standards. If someone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer does your gas work in your home there's a potential risk to your family and property's safety.

Gas Safe registered engineers will carry an ID card which has the following features.

On the front of the card:

  • A licence number: this can be verified on the Gas Safe Register website or by calling 0800 408 5500
  • A start date
  • An expiry date
  • A security hologram

On the back of the card:

  • An up-to-date list of the gas work your engineer is qualified or registered to do
  • Make sure that the tradesperson's qualifications are up-to-date on the card
  • Make sure that the work you need him/her to do is featured on the back of the card
  • Check the licence number on the Gas Safe Register website or by calling 0800 408 5500
