Gable
The triangle of brickwork that forms the roof, usually found on the end of a house.

Gable Board
A timber board following the lines of the apex on the gable-end covering the ends of roof timbers, protecting them from rain. Also known as Barge Boards or Verge Boards.

Galvanized
Covered with a protective coating of zinc.

Gang
1 gang = 1 single socket, 2 gang = 1 double socket, where the power points are 13 amp.

Gauged Brickwork
Fine brickwork with very thin joints.

Gel
Any substance with a thick jelly-like consistency.

Glazing Bar
Thin bar shaped to receive a pane of glass.

Going
The depth of one tread on a staircase.

Grain
The general direction of wood fibres; the pattern produced on the surface of timber by cutting through the fibres. (See also End Grain and Short Grain).

Gravity Fed System
Central heating system that circulates water by gravity and water expansion.

Grommet
A rubber or plastic ring, which lines a hole to protect electrical cable from damage.

Groove
A long narrow channel cut into a material.

Ground Heave
Swelling of clay sub-soil due to absorption of too much moisture - this can cause an upward movement in foundations.

Grounds
Strips of wood fixed to a wall to provide nail-fixing points for skirting boards, door casings etc. (See also Pallets).

GRP
Glass Reinforcement Plastic - a type of fibreglass.

Gullet
A notch between two saw teeth.

Gully
An opening into a drain, normally at ground level, placed to receive water etc. from downpipes and wastepipes.
