Hardcore
Broken bricks or stones used to form a sub-base below paving, foundations etc.
Head
The height of the surface of water above a specific point - used as a measurement of pressure.
Header
The end face of a brick.
Header Tank
Small open tank that feeds water to central heating system.
Heave
An upward swelling of level ground caused by excess moisture.
Held Plate
The top horizontal part of a stud partition wall.
Helical
Spiral shaped.
Herringbone
Zigzag pattern of brickwork.
Hip Tile
Roof tile shaped to cover hip of roof.
Hoarding
Temporary protection or security fencing.
Hoggin
A fine ballast, usually clay based, used to form a sub-base for paving.
Hollow Wall
A cavity wall - the continuous gap between the inner and outer brickwork usually 50mm in width.
Hone
To sharpen a tool.
Horns
Extended ends of door or window stiles which protect the corners from damage while in storage.
Housing
A narrow channel which is cut across the general direction of wood grain to form part of a joint.
