Needle
A temporary large wooden beam which supports the section of a wall above an opening, before installing a permanent rolled steel joist or lintel.

Neutral
The section of an electrical circuit which carries the flow of current back to source.

Newel
The large post supporting a staircase handrail at the top and bottom of stairs. Also, the central post of a spiral staircase.

Nogging
Horizontal wooden infill inserted between joists.

Nosing
Rounded edge of a stair tread which projects beyond the riser below.
