10p solar incentive could create 30,000 jobs, says campaign group

22/09/09
Around 30,000 jobs would be created for builders and electricians involved in the installation and servicing of solar panels by 2014 if the government increased its proposed Clean Energy Cashback incentives by 10p, an industry group has said.

The government is currently proposing to pay home owners and businesses that install solar panels between 26p and 36.5p per unit for the power they generate.

We Support Solar, a coalition of companies, environmental bodies and individuals, said increasing this by 10p would drive demand for 400,000 new solar panel installations on homes by 2014, creating thousands of extra jobs.

In a statement, We Support Solar said the "right investment in solar energy in Britain will create lasting economic, social and environmental change".

The group's 'Small Change. Big Difference' campaign is supported by the Federation of Master Builders, the National Federation of Roofing Contractors and the Electrical Contractors' Association. It is also backed by Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.
