Admin costs 'holding back green houses'

The government needs to cut the administration costs associated with meeting the requirements of the Code for Sustainable Homes if it wants to encourage more
builders to deliver
green houses, one expert has claimed.
Construction Products Association industry affairs director John Tebbit said that a couple of years ago, consultants' fees associated with meeting level three of the code came to around £900.
Now, building the same property would entail administration costs of between £3,000 and £4,000, he added.
"If I was spending £4,000 on the code fees rather than the £900 I spent, that is £3,000 that I can't spend on better insulation or a solar panel, a better boiler or whatever," Mr. Tebbit commented.
In addition to addressing the cost of meeting the Code for Sustainable Homes, the industry expert also said that the government should look at creating a more consistent message for builders in its green legislation.
According to a poll at the recent Sustainability Now event, 72 per cent of the public believe the change of administration is a good opportunity to overhaul Whitehall policy on
energy efficiency and environmental issues.
