Alexander-Sinclair picks some favourites from Hampton Court

14/07/09
Garden designer James Alexander-Sinclair has picked out some of his highlights from last week's RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, which took place from July 7th to July 12th.

On the Gardeners' World blog, Mr Alexander-Sinclair said he had been particularly busy at this year's event filming for the BBC, hosting the Daily Telegraph Theatre and judging the show gardens.

Two stand-out designs were entitled It's Hard To See and the Quilted Velvet Garden.

It's Hard To See, created by Rebecca Butterworth, Victoria Pustygina and Ludovica Gianneshi, featured a "square hole lined with mirrors" that was "beautifully planted" to give the illusion of a never-ending garden "stretching way back underground".

The Quilted Velvet Garden, meanwhile, was the second in designer Tony Smith's trilogy of green spaces for Quilted Velvet. It consisted of 30,000 oak seedlings surrounded by "beautifully made oaken structures", Mr Alexander-Sinclair noted.

Both gardens won gold medals in the RHS competition.
