Amy Viner blossoms at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

21/05/09
Amy Viner has won the Best Junior Display Award at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Chelsea Flower Show, while the RHS Young Chelsea Florist of the Year will be announced later today (May 21st).

Despite the young gardener - who is a member of Worcester Floral Arrangement Society Junior Club - scooping gold at the event, there are concerns that children are losing their green fingers.

A survey commissioned by the Children's Society found 79% of older parents (those aged between 55 and 64) say they have gardened with their children. However, this figure falls to 62% for parents under the age of 35.

It was also revealed 80% of adults believe their kids will know less about getting their hands dirty than their parents.

Commenting on the findings, educational psychologist Laverne Antrobus said children who are taught to garden are more likely to eat a healthy and balanced diet, while they are also more considerate.

She said creating a small garden at home "encourages children to learn about caring and nurturing a plant".

"If the plant produces some fruit/vegetable, children seem more inclined to try new things that perhaps they would not eat ordinarily."
