Autumn 'will be home improvement season'

Edited by Sophie Griffiths.

The autumn is likely to see a sharp increase in home improvement work across the country, it has been claimed.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, said once the summer is over, many residential property owners will start thinking about adding a new kitchen or bathroom.

He added that they will hopefully consider upgrading the energy efficiency of their abodes through the installation of cavity wall insulation and draught proofing windows and doors.

Following the worst winter in 30 years, people will also be taking stock of what needs to be done around the house to ensure they can "start putting things right" before the cold weather returns.

The impact of January's harsh conditions was highlighted this week when British Gas announced a 98 per cent increase in its operating profits for the first six months of the year.

According to the firm, gas use climbed eight per cent as many home owners cranked up the central heating to fend off the cold.
