Boiler scrappage scheme goes live in Scotland

Edited by Tom Bardsley.

Up to 750 residential property landlords in Scotland can now claim up to £400 in cash-back towards the cost of replacing an old G-rated boiler with a new, greener model.

Marking the launch of the scrappage scheme at the Scottish Association of Landlords conference in Edinburgh, housing and communities minister Alex Neil said it will help to make accommodation "cost efficient and energy efficient" for tenants.

Installing a new boiler should cut heating costs by around 25 per cent, which would knock approximately £225 off the annual bill for a three-bedroom semi-detached home.

Furthermore, the programme should eliminate a tonne of CO2 per property, per year.

Mr. Neil said the scheme is also designed to act as a "stimulus" to support jobs for plumbers and heating engineers.

"I want private landlords to take advantage of schemes and offers available to improve their properties," he told the conference.

Cash-back vouchers will be handed out on a first come, first served basis and must be used within 12 weeks of being issued.

Earlier this year, a boiler scrappage scheme offering 125,000 vouchers in England was fully subscribed in three months.
