Boiler scrappage scheme hailed as success

The boiler scrappage scheme launched by the last government has been really successful and it is a "great shame" that it did not continue beyond its original limit, according to one expert.

Under the initiative, which was unveiled in December's pre-Budget report, 125,000 vouchers that offered a £400 rebate on the cost of replacing an old boiler with an A-rated model were made available to residential property owners in England.

All of the vouchers were snapped up by March and figures published earlier this week by the Energy Saving Trust, which administered the scheme, show that 58,177 people have already received the partial refund after having the work done.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, said that he was disappointed to see the scheme come to an end, as in the current economic climate, households will need an incentive to replace boilers that are 15 or 20 years old.

"If there is a subsidy or a trade-in, then I believe they will definitely continue to look at it," he added.

The previous government had claimed that the scrappage scheme supported jobs for around 130,000 plumbers and heating engineers.
