The government has officially launched the boiler scrappage scheme announced in December's pre-Budget report, which aims to help 125,000 residential property owners to cut their carbon emissions, save on fuel bills and support jobs for plumbers and heating engineers.
From today (January 5th), households in England with G-rated boilers can apply to the Energy Saving Trust for a voucher worth £400 towards the cost of fitting a new, A-rated boiler or a renewable heating system like a biomass boiler or heat pump.
The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) said the scheme will sustain work for 130,000 installers and more than 25 UK-based boiler manufacturers.
Installing a new boiler should also cut average household energy bills by between £200 and £235 a year.
Furthermore, the government said replacing 125,000 G-rated boilers should save around 140,000 tonnes of CO2 a year - the equivalent of taking 45,000 cars off the road.
Prime minister Gordon Brown said: "Today's announcement will slash household energy bills and carbon emissions while providing an important boost for the British heating industry."
