BPF urges builders to join Site Life campaign

The British Property Federation (BPF) has called on builders and developers to join a national scheme that aims to get mothballed construction sites back into use as temporary community spaces.

Property Week's Site Life campaign sees property firms foot the bill for making short-term alterations to their stalled or empty plots that allows them to be used by local residents until work is ready to start again.

In return, councils provide assurances that planning permission for the sites will be maintained.

Property Week editor Giles Barrie said that failing to get empty sites back into use risks "alienating the public and blighting towns and cities".

BPF chief executive Liz Peace added that while the campaign provides an innovative way of dealing with problems created by the economic crisis, it is essential that there are formal agreements in place over the timescale of temporary site changes to ensure builders are not "left with something they cannot develop once they are able to continue with their plans".

The BPF is a lobbying organisation that campaigns on behalf of its members to raise the profile of the property industry.
