The BRE Trust recorded a "significant increase" in its spending on research projects to improve the environmental performance of the UK's built environment in 2009-10, it has been announced.
Sir Neville Sims, the company's chairman, told its annual general meeting that over £2.7 million was allocated to these studies during the last fiscal year.
The lion's share of the funding - £1.8 million - went to the NHBC Foundation. This is a joint initiative with warranty provider the National House-Building Council that was launched in 2006 to facilitate intelligence sharing, technological advances and research and development in the
residential property sector.
Its work is primarily focused on helping
builders to improve sustainability and meet the government's target of having all new homes classed as zero carbon by 2016.
The remainder of the BRE Trust's research spending went to its University Centres of Excellence, which support 26 PhD students.
Sir Neville said that on top of this funding, the trust also contributed £283,000 in 2009-10 towards a three-year, £1.5 million programme to develop construction processes, materials and products with a low environmental footprint.
