Britons come top of the class in Climate Change IQ test

British adults and children are more knowledgeable about climate change than people in France, Germany and Spain but many are not taking enough practical action to improve energy efficiency, a new survey has found.

Launched to mark the start of Energy Saving Week, the Energy Saving Trust's (EST) Climate Change IQ test posed true or false questions about the causes and effects of carbon emissions to 6,000 people across the four countries.

Some 68 per cent of Britons answered their questions correctly, putting them ahead of their European neighbours.

However, British children were also found to waste the most energy, with 44 per cent admitting to leaving the lights on when they are not in a room and 40 per cent saying they use more electrical gadgets than any other family member.

EST chief executive Philip Sellwood said: "Our research clearly shows the British public has the knowledge, however they don't seem to act on it.

"It is time for everyone across the UK to think green, act green and be green."

Around a quarter of Britain's carbon emissions come from residential property.
