Despite the recession,
residential property owners are "working hard to adopt a greener lifestyle", according to a new report.
The Co-operative Bank's Ethical Consumerism Report shows total household spending on environmentally-friendly products and services topped £6.4 billion last year, up from £6 billion in 2007 and £5.5 billion in 2006.
UK home owners spent £3.9 billion using
builders and other
local tradesmen to improve
energy efficiency last year, as well as £1.8 billion on green appliances and £1.9 billion on upgrading to more energy efficient boilers.
Some £333 million was spent on renewable energy technology in 2008, up from £244 million the year before.
The typical household spent £250 a year on green products last year, the bank said.
Last week, the UK Green Building Council called on the government to provide more support to households that want to make environmentally-friendly
home improvements.
Following the announcement of a boiler scrappage scheme targeted at 125,000 home owners, the organisation's chief executive Paul King said: "Householders need help refurbishing their whole home, not just their boiler."
