Apple trees have been named as the favourite variety of tree for British
gardeners.
A survey of over 2,000 readers of
Gardeners' World magazine ahead of National Tree Week found that 83 per cent of British homes have spruced up their
landscaping with at least one tree.
Holly and cherry trees were behind apple as the most popular varieties, appearing in 35 per cent and 28 per cent of gardens respectively.
Gardeners' World magazine recently provided green-fingered
residential property owners looking to add a tree to their own backyard with its top trees across five categories.
Top for wildlife is the crab apple tree, while the Chilean fire bush was named as the best "seasonal spectacular". A Japanese maple will produce the best autumn colours, while the Acer Griseum has the best year-round appeal.
The Chinese Red Birch was picked as the best tree for front gardens.
Gardeners' World magazine editor Adam Pasco said: "Not only are trees beautiful, they soak up carbon dioxide and are very easy to plant."
Mr. Pasco has been the editor of
Gardeners' World magazine since its launch in 1991.
