Budding gardeners scoop show prize

26/08/09
A team of young gardeners are celebrating after their design claimed the top prize in the Southport Flower Show garden challenge.

The seven local children were given little over an hour to create their green space using items donated from exhibitors at the annual event - and a little help from Professor David Bellamy OBE and gardening broadcaster Sir Roddy Llewellyn, the Southport Visiter reports.

The winning garden, named Peace and Tranquillity, features a waterfall and a wooden bridge.

Judge Peter Downham of the Southport Rotary Club praised the design for its smart use of a small space.

Tom Sutton, ten, of the winning team said: "It was really fund to take part and I definitely want to come again next year to defend our title."

Professor Bellamy commented that the garden challenge had been a "great idea", as it is important to encourage children to grow their own plants and vegetables from an early age.

The Southport Flower Show has been held annually in the seaside resort since 1924.
