Builders including Crest Nicholson, Barratt and Stewart Milne Group have formed a new partnership with Oxford Brookes University, building supplies firm H+H and built environment body BRE to deliver new sustainable housing.
Known as AIMC4, the consortium will work on 12 new properties that will achieve a level four rating for
energy efficiency under the Code for Sustainable Homes without relying on renewable technology.
Instead,
energy efficiency will be achieved through the building fabric and primary building services, the group said.
The
green houses will be constructed in locations across the UK using three different methods - masonry, timber and hybrid. They will then be sold and the owners' feedback will be used alongside regular monitoring to improve
builders' understanding of fabric performance and emissions levels.
Dr. Peter Bonfield, chief executive of independent research consultancy BRE, said: "AIMC4 is a groundbreaking research project that I have no doubt will pave the way for huge changes in the future delivery of sustainable homes in the UK."
Earlier this year, housing minister John Healey announced that all new housing in the UK will have to be zero carbon by 2016.
