Builders set for 'tough time' in 2011

Builders are set to endure a "very difficult" 2011 as spending cuts hit public sector workloads, according to one industry observer.

Greg Pitcher of Construction News said the sector has been "hit very hard" in the last few years by the effects of the credit crunch and the subsequent recession.

Now, its nascent recovery has been dented by the "severe" cutbacks announced by the coalition government, which will cost builders a "massive amount of work".

Looking to 2011, Mr. Pitcher claimed the anticipated decline in orders for publicly funded infrastructure and residential property will leave the construction industry heavily reliant on private sector growth.

"It is going to be tough for a little while to come," Mr. Pitcher stated.

His comments follow the publication of figures by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which showed 59 per cent of its members saw no change in construction orders between the second and third quarters of the year.

Of those that did report a movement, a net ten per cent said they had declined.
