Builders told to embrace energy efficiency

Edited by Bob Witham.

Builders have been told that they should not underestimate the scale of the possibilities put forward by low carbon construction in the years to 2020.

A number of initiatives are already underway to make sure that people in the industry are prepared for the energy efficiency commitments that are due to be incorporated into the UK's housing stock over the coming decade.

They include the Cut the Carbon awareness campaign that sector skills council ConstructionSkills is due to embark on, along with action groups to identify skills gaps and help to overcome these.

Paul Morrell, chair of the Low Carbon Construction Innovation and Growth Team, says: "The requirement for low carbon construction is probably the biggest change management programme that the industry has faced since Victorian times."

He adds that builders within the industry itself and the government must collaboratively rise to the challenge that energy efficiency targets put in place.

The Innovation and Growth Team has been given the task by the secretary of state for business innovation and skills of determining how the industry can respond to such challenges, feeding back to both the government and the construction sector itself.
