Builders urged to develop low-carbon skills

Builders who develop green skills will have access to "huge" business opportunities in the near future, according to one organisation.

CITB-ConstructionSkills, a sector skills council and industry training board, said over half (57 per cent) of residential property owners have either carried out home improvements to cut their carbon output or are planning to do so over the next five years.

To support tradesmen in obtaining the know-how to meet this demand, the body has joined up with the Federation of Master Builders and the National Specialist Contractors Council to launch the Cut the Carbon campaign.

The initiative aims to promote the expertise that will allow small and medium firms to deliver the "low-carbon future that clients want and that legislation demands".

CITB-ConstructionSkills chief executive Mark Farrar said: "Through the Cut the Carbon campaign, the support is in place - now it is up to the contractors to ensure that they secure the benefits."

The UK currently aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 80 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050.
